Using Gmail with CS Email Addresses

Using Gmail with CS Email Addresses

Using Gmail or other non-UW-Madison email systems to read or send your UW-Madison is not recommended. However, we are aware that many CS faculty, staff and students prefer to use Gmail, so we have provided these instructions.

Using Gmail to read your cs.wisc.edu email

To read your cs.wisc.edu email with Gmail, you will have to forward your mail to gmail. Follow the instructions at Office 365 - Set/Manage a Forward on a NetID or Service Account

Using Gmail to send email from your cs.wisc.edu email address:

Note: You CAN NOT use gmail to send from your wisc.edu email address

  1. In most cases, your cs.wisc.edu email address is an additional address (alias) on your @wisc.edu WiscMail mailbox. Configure your WiscMail account to use your cs.wisc.edu email address as your primary email address (so that any email sent from office365 will be “from” your CS email address): Office 365 - Change your Primary Address

  2. (optional) change your work email address in the UW Directory: Check your information in the Personal Information module in My UW-Madison Portal . click “Change” next to the Campus Business Email email address to update it.

  3. Generate an email authentication token for the CS authenticated SMTP server: go to CSL Account Management and then “EMAIL TOKEN” in the top menu, and generate an email authentication token. The authenticated SMTP server does not use your CS password, only the generated email authentication tokens.

  4. Add your cs.wisc.edu email account to gmail (you can not use your wisc.edu email address): Send emails from a different address or alias

Use the following SMTP server information:

    • SMTP server: smtp-auth.cs.wisc.edu
    • username: your CS username (bbadger not bbadger@cs.wisc.edu)
    • password: the email authentication token generated in the previous step
    • If you need to select a port number/secured connection method, use TLS wth port 587
