INSTRUCTIONAL LAB LINUX UPGRADES
The Instructional lab Linux workstations have been upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (from Redhat Enterprise Linux 6). Ubuntu is more flexible and keeps software more current than RHEL, and is more in line with students' expectations for a Linux desktop.
Note: Ubuntu is also available for research desktop computers, please use the "Request an Operating System Change/Upgrade" form on www-auth.cs.wisc.edu to request an upgrade for your workstation.
New students will be able to activate their accounts on Tuesday, September 6 (the first day of classes). Some student accounts have already been created. Students are notified via email to their campus email address with CS account activation instructions.
Only students registered for classes will be given an account, disk quota and paper quota. Students who have not yet registered, students "sitting in" on the class, or any other special arrangements by which they are not registered for the class will NOT have an account or any additional resources.
There is a delay of at least 1 working day from the time a student registers for a course to the time that the account is ready. This delay is due to the batch nature of data availability from the registration system. Any student who is not yet registered for a course should register as soon as possible.
Students with CS accounts from the Spring or Summer semester do not need to re-activate their account. They should login using the same CS username and password from the previous semester.
Students who need to activate their account should use the Account Activation link at the top of the CSL web site.
The MySQL server is running correctly as of 10:36 pm. Please report any problems to email@example.com
The CSL Shared MySQL server (mysql.cs.wisc.edu) will be offline for emergency maintenance tonight (Wednesday March 23) starting at 8PM. Estimated recovery time is 10PM, but that may change.
Sorry for the short notice. That is the nature of emergencies.
Update: The problem has been fixed (it was an error in ldap data, as a side-effect of other issues)
Email to cs.wisc.edu addresses who are not using Office 365 is currently not being delivered. Affected groups include our request/supprt address, firstname.lastname@example.org, alumni users with cs.wisc.edu addresses and mailman mailing lists.
This appears to be a problem or change at DoIT. A ticket is open with the DoIT Helpdesk and the CSL is continuing to look into the problem.
